I’m from Greeley, Colorado. So was Gene Randels. But we never knew each other back home. We met at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, and became friends there. Gene was a real fine cowboy poet, and I fell in love with a poem of his. I told him I thought it’d make a good song, and he asked me if I’d be interested in writing it. I agreed to do it, and this is the result. Gene said he knew the fella in the song when Gene was a boy. It’s a heck of a tale of horseflesh and a horserace across the prairie with the stakes as high as they get. Regrettably, Gene died before I got the song finished.
